BACKGROUND
For this project I redesigned the book cover for the classic story, Moby Dick by Herman Melville.
PROCESS
IDEA AND CONCEPT BUILDING:
To give the classic novel a modern refresh of its book cover, I chose to use a minimalist approach to the design. Minimalism provides a modern look using geometric shapes and ample spacing which will also help create a timeless design.
Rationale:
Many of the previous Moby Dick book cover designs I researched have a more serious note to them which may deter some people from wanting to read the book. Therefore, I went with a fun and engaging approach to the book cover in hopes of improving the interest of people who pick up the book. To achieve this approach, I designed the cover so that the front and back can act as standalone designs, but once both are spread the reader will see the design in its full complete form. Requiring the reader to spread both the front and back covers promotes reader engagement, as well as lengthening the amount of time they spend with the book. The longer the reader pays attention to the book, the more memorable it is for them and more likely for them to read the book.
